Torrington Hosts Walking Tour with DECD and Neighbor Cultural District Representatives

On September 17, 2024, Torrington’s downtown came alive as representatives from cultural districts across Connecticut and the Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) gathered for a walking tour hosted by the Torrington Cultural District Committee. This event showcased the city’s unique blend of art, history, and community, reinforcing Torrington’s role as a vital cultural hub in the state.  Representatives from the state's established and perspective cultural districts attended, including the towns Wethersfield, Bristol, New London, Woodbury, and Norwalk.

The tour began at KidsPlay Children's Museum with remarks from local leaders, including Torrington’s Mayor Elinor Carbone, who highlighted the significance of the city’s cultural growth and its impact on the broader creative economy in Connecticut.

Participants visited several key stops throughout downtown Torrington, beginning with Kelly’s Crystals, where the importance of small businesses in the cultural district was emphasized. Shop owner Rachel Kelly also announced that her new business, Kelly's Jewelry, would be opening in fall 2024.

The tour continued to the Torrington Historical Society, Nutmeg Ballet Conservatory, and Nutmeg Fudge—each offering a glimpse into the city’s artistic and historical contributions.

The group then visited Five Points Gallery, where they explored the intersection of contemporary art and community development. The tour concluded with a gathering at The Warner Theatre, where attendees enjoyed lunch, networking, and a preview of promotional videos highlighting Torrington’s cultural district.

Throughout the tour, conversations centered on collaboration, community engagement, and the future of the arts in Torrington. The event underscored the city’s dedication to fostering its cultural assets and continuing to grow as a destination for creative expression.

As part of the day’s events, the Torrington Cultural District Committee also held a brief meeting to discuss a proposed mural behind the library, signaling ongoing public art initiatives that will further enhance the city’s creative landscape.
