The Art of the Face Mask

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in face masks becoming a part of every day fashion. Like with any article of clothing, face masks have slowly become a way for us to express ourselves. Featured here are some masks that, along with serving protective purposes, serve artistic purposes as well.
Ellen Moon - Cornwall
"This mask (left) features hand embroidered dill flowers, gem marigolds and camomile flowers. All are edible and have medicinal uses in calming inflammations. This mask took about 12-15 hours to make."

Kristie Arbesman - Burlington
"I wanted to help others during the pandemic so I joined the Sewing Face Masks - Farmington Valley CT Facebook Page. I signed up to sew masks for the Midstate Hospital in Middletown. I also learned through my church that Cherry Brook Health Center in Canton needed face masks so I sewed 15 for them. I also made masks for friends/family that were on the front lines. After posting photos of the masks online friends even asked me to make masks for their families. I made more than 50 masks. It felt so good to help others during this time."

Laurel Archambault - Torrington
"I made these masks because as an art educator I will have to wear these when we return to school. I wanted to create something that would educate and hopefully inspire students as we try to navigate this unusual time in our schools. I plan to also create a few that have more images and some humorous art sayings as well."

Robin McCahill - Thomaston
"These masks were made to promote kids wearing masks. I started with the line drawing and then participants finished the design."

Wendy Tam - Harwinton
"I took ideas from YouTube and added my own twists for style and function. The masks feature a replaceable wire nose bridge, an internal pocket for disposable supplemental filter material, color coordinated stitching, elastic straps, accent colors for the lining, three dimensional pleats for snug fit around the nose and chin, and come in three sizes."
