Mental Health CT Artists Inspired by MLK Mural

photos by Shawn Matel and Amy Smith

Amy Smith, Mending Art Coordinator from Mental Health CT, had shared the news about the MLK mural being installed in downtown Torrington to some artist she works with. The artists’ works were displayed at the Franklin Plaza Farmer’s Market alongside Our Culture is Beautiful sharing their stories and keeping the beat of life on the drums.

See how the Torrington Mural installment, part of the MLK:39 Mural Tour, has inspired these emerging artists to create! Check out the artist that Amy Smith has been working with see how they expressed themselves through the arts with the conversation behind the mural.

As of today, we have raised $6,460, with 12 days left to donate! If you would like to support not just the mural but the inspiration and peace it brings to people to have a voice, click here to donate.

After hearing about the Martin Luther King Mural project, I looked into MLK and listened to all his speeches and put them all together. I mixed the past with the present, trying to figure stuff out. Things are repeating themselves. Things are happening in our city but they can be happening anywhere. MLK mentioned the Lord in his speeches and so I added the cross because I think that is important to see. New Paragraph

The Martin Luther King mural is important for everyone with color. Martin Luther King was not just for black people; he was for white people too. He got people together to meet other people, share ideas and join together. Help someone. For the people, with the people, by the people. My painting is someone who looks like me, it also looks like someone new. We all deserve a change.

What inspired my work? Thinking about Martin Luther King, Jr., I was reminded of the speech given by Tyler Perry at the Oscars. Although I admit to not watching it live, the speech he gave really resonated with me. I thought that it would go well with the mural that you are painting in Torrington. Also, I think that Dr. King's movement can appeal to everyone that is poor and somewhat downtrodden in our society. If people came together across racial and ethnic lines, then they could be a powerful force for change. Together, we could challenge the rich and powerful. Our voices would speak louder if we could get together and bring about the real change that would reshape society.

The Martin Luther King mural is important because everyone can feel inspired for freedom and liberty. Like Martin Luther King, anyone is capable of making a difference in the world. Make the world a better place.

Again, if you have been inspired you can donate NOW! EVERY DOLLAR donated will be matched! Here is the donation link.
