Adult Art Classes in NWCT in 2023

Looking to explore your creativity or develop new art skills in 2023? Check out these NWCT adult art classes!

1. Pastel Classes by Mary Beth Sasso


Mary Beth Sasso, a pastel artist based in New Hartford, is offering pastel classes for learners of all skill levels. Covering a broad  variety of fundamental skills and concepts, her courses aim to give students the ability to develop their own artistic style while working with an accomplished professional artist. 

2. Multi-Media Classes by Heather Neilson


With courses on art journaling, gel plate monoprinting, expressive abstract painting, and mixed-media collage, Heather Neilson provides excellent options for adults looking to explore their creative side through a new medium in the new year. With both online and in-person classes available, these courses are also flexible enough to fit even busy schedules.

3. Creative Camaraderie at Five Points


Since opening the new Five Points Arts Center in Torrington, Five Points has brought a wide variety of interesting and enriching programs and workshops to northwest Connecticut. One of their most recent additions is Creative Camaraderie, an uninstructed workshop in which artists of all skill levels are encouraged to come together to form new connections while working on personal projects. This space provides artists the opportunity to meet each other while taking inspiration from the resources available through Five Points. 

4. Open Studio and Classes at Village Center for the Arts


The Village Center for the Arts in New Milford provides artists of all ages and skill levels with the opportunity to utilize their large open studio space and a wide variety of available materials and tools. In addition to the open studio, VCA also offers classes and workshops for adults, including classes for groups and a clay workshop for seniors.

5. Watercolor Classes by Pamela Harnois


Working with transparent watercolor in a loose and impressionistic style, Pamela Harnois creates colorful and expressive paintings inspired by the natural world. Her online watercolor classes share some of her techniques with students, helping them to find their own voice as they create colorful and vibrant pieces of their own.

6. Art Education at the Washington Art Association


Founded in 1952, the Washington Art Association is one of the longest-standing providers of high-quality art education for adults in northwest Connecticut. With a variety of classes for different skill levels offered throughout the year, WAA is a great way for students to connect with the techniques and instructors that interest them.

7. Mountain Dulcimer Instruction by Thomasina Levy


Thomasina Levy, 2005/2006 Connecticut State Troubadour and award-winning mountain dulcimer performer, shares her skill with this unique historical instrument through a series of classes and workshops for adult learners. All classes can now be taken online, making Levy’s classes a flexible option for those looking to develop their musical skills in the new year. 

8. Connecting with Balance by Pilobolus


Pilobolus’ Connecting with Balance classes help people, especially seniors, to better understand their own bodies and balance through dance. In addition to the physical and mental benefits of this course, it also makes the art of dance accessible to people of varying ability levels. 

9. Mixed Media Instruction by Lori Barker


Mixed-media artist Lori Barker offers several classes and workshops to help students to connect to the creative process through the different techniques used by Barker in her own art. Her extensive experience with non-traditional printing techniques and mixed-media collage make these classes a wonderful opportunity to explore new artistic media. 

10. Circus, Aerial Arts, and Capoeira at Thrive Movement Studio


Thrive Movement Studio in Harwinton offers courses on the physical arts of circus, aerial arts, and capoeira. Experienced instructors Heidi Kirchofer and Joel Melendez help students to connect to their own bodies while developing their appreciation and understanding of these art forms.

11. Jennifer Sabella's Hue Studio


From her cozy studio in Litchfield, Jennifer Sabella offers classes teaching palette knife and drip painting techniques. This is a wonderful way to learn about color, texture, and rhythm in art in the new year!
