The Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism (CCT) will feature nationally recognized speakers and presenters at a series of three, artist professional development conferences entitled: Taking Care of Business—Career Strategies for Visual Artists. Artists must register in advance by visiting www.LetsGoArts.org/ArtistsWorkshops. The fee for registration is $20 for each conference (includes lunch) in the series. The Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation is the workshop series sponsor.

The first conference, hosted by the Cultural Alliance of Fairfield County, is titled Career Planning and will take place on March 6th, Saturday, from 8:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield. This one day event is hosted by the Gallery of Contemporary Art at the University.

The keynote speaker on March 6th will be Ms. Karen Atkinson speaking on Big Picture Career Planning. Ms. Atkinson is an artist, independent curator, faculty member at CalArts, workshop leader and author of business software for artists. She will lend a national perspective to career planning and highlight the many different avenues artists are following to develop their careers and define personal success. She will share her personal experience and the experiences of the artists that she has helped to educate and empower and provide practical information about professional practice skills.

At the conference, visual artists will choose from two of four workshops presented throughout the day. The workshops offered are Hybrid Careers: Blend your art-work with your work-work also lead by Ms. Atkinson. This seminar will illuminate how hybrid artists can be found working in science, emerging technologies, and healthcare among others. NYFA Artist Source: Get connected to the resources you need, will be presented by Amber Hawk Swanson of the New York Foundation for the Arts. It will teach the use of this extensive national directory of awards, services, and publications for artists.

Create Your Own Future: Mastering the art of setting and achieving goals will be taught by Jane Pollak, an internationally known professional speaker, author and certified coach who will help participants change from being task-oriented individuals to goal-setters with a purpose. Thinking Outside the Studio: Using your unique skills to generate income is a panel discussion with artists who have found ways to make a living using their unique creative skills in related careers. Life coach Hal Tweedy who has coached artists of all types, individuals needing a career change, and many small business owners will guide the exploration.

During the on-line registration process, artists will have the opportunity to submit images of their work to be featured in a “Jpeg Jam” the day of the conference. Lunch will be provided with time for networking. For more information, visit the registration site at www.LetsGoArts.org/ArtistsWorkshops or call the hosting organization. For the March 6th conference call the Cultural Alliance of Fairfield County at 203-256-2329 or email info@CulturalAllianceFC.org
